Got Resources?

Several classes are getting ready to begin research projects, and what better place is there to find resources than the library?! In addition to the many books in our collection, we have access to a couple of on-line resources that you can use at home:

World Book Online is an on-line encyclopedia with the most recently updated articles than any print encyclopedia. It can also provide "Back in Time" articles--supplemental articles written in past years; a dictionary to define words that are unfamilliar in the text; Special Reports to provide additional resources; related web sites; Research Guides--provide links to related World Book articles, study questions, and lists of additional resources; the ability to save your research pages so you can easily go back to them the next time you log in; and it even provides the proper citation for your bibliography. Use the link: www.worldbookonline.com and enter the User ID: moreland (all lower case) and the password: moreland (all lower case).

WebPath Express is a feature of our library catalog. It provides a list of websites on your search topic that have been reviewed by teachers who agree that the information provided is accurate, not biased, and appropriate for students to use for research. Use the link: http://msd-library.moreland.org and click on Moreland Middle School. Then click on WebPath Express at the far left side of the page.

What is Mrs. G reading?

I just finished reading Divergent by Veronica Roth. Dystopian Society novels are becoming very popular, and Divergent is another book to fit this genre. In this book, society is divided into five factions based on personality traits. Amity is for artists and the creative people; Abnegation is for the selfless - people who put the needs of others before their own needs; Erudite is for those who seek knowledge; Candor people say what's on their mind and don't lie; and the Dauntless are brave, strong, and daring.

Beatrice was born and raised in the Abnegation faction, but has always felt uncomfortable there. At age sixteen, she takes her aptitude test to help her decide which faction she should choose for the rest of her life. But a rare thing happens--her test is inconclusive, and her proctor tells her that she is divergent--or not exclusively belonging to only one faction. At her choosing ceremony, Beatrice chooses a faction other than Abnegation. How will her parents feel when both she and her brother change factions? Can she survive the initiation training? Will she be "cut" and become factionless? You'll need to read Divergent to find out!

If you liked The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins, you will like Divergent. And hang on to your hats folks, Insurgent (sequel to Divergent) will be out in May 2012!

Note: This book graphically describes some violent scenes. If violence is disturbing to you, it might be better to wait until you are older to read this book.
