3rd Annual Bookmark Contest

Do you like to read? Do you like to draw? Here's your opportunity to combine two things you love by creating a bookmark and entering your design in our 3rd Annual Bookmark Contest in the fall. This year's theme will be My Favorite Book I Read this Summer. What you need to do to participate is:

  • Read several books this summer--as many as you want!
  • Choose your favorite from the books you read this summer
  • Pick up an entry form at the library when you return to school in the fall
  • Create your bookmark following all the rules and directions on the entry form
  • Submit your entry in the library

The winning bookmark will be reproduced and distributed to the whole school, and the winning designer will receive a prize! So start scouting around for some great summer reads!

End of the Year

The library is now CLOSED unless you are returning books or paying for lost items. All library books are due back no later than Friday, May 24. It's time for me to track down missing books and get the library neat and clean so we can reopen shortly after school starts in the fall. Please demonstrate your RESPONSIBILITY by returning your library books and/or clearing your library account. We will withhold yearbooks, end-of-the-year priviliges. diplomas (8th grade), and report cards if your library account is not cleared. If you have any questions about overdue notices or bills, please see me in the library.

What is Mrs. G reading?

I just finished reading Disconnect by Lois Peterson.

14-year-old Daria has recetly moved from Calgary to another part of Canada. She is constantly using technology--cell phone, texting, email, facebook, etc. to stay in touch with the friends she lft behind. In fact, her parents are a little concerned that she might be addicted to technology. Daria gets a job babysitting 2 children a few days a week after school to earn money for a trip to visit her friends in Calgary. She thinks everything is going quite well, until one day while babysitting, Daria is paying more attention to her phone and text messages than the children she is supposed to be watching--and one of them becomes seriously hurt. Does Daria believe she is at fault? Is it fair for her parents to take away her phone and access to technology for a whole month? Could the child have died? What will she learn from this experience?

EVERYONE should read this book! This is a highly relevant topic for all adolescents today. Most students at MMS have a cell phone. Many have facebook or Twitter accounts. My own daughter sends over 3,000 text messages a month. Are the youth of today addicted to technology? Do they know how to interact with people face-to-face? Would they go through withdrawal symptoms if you took away their access to technology? This is a growing concern with many parents. Read Disconnect and discuss it with your parents/children then determine for yourself if the people you know are addicted to technology.
